Silica fume, or microsilica, consists of extremely small silicon dioxyde particules. The composition and the size of this particules (150 times smaller than cement particules, <1 micron) allow them to react chemically and physically with your cement mix. The chemical reaction of the silica fume (Si O2 reacts with Ca(OH)2 increasing the Calcium Silicate Hydrates) strengthens the bonds in the cement matrix increasing the strength of the end product. On the physical side, the micro particules fill the gap between the cement particules leading to reduced porosity and permeability of your end product
