Mica is a naturally occurring mineral belonging to the phyllosilicate group, mostly composed of aluminium and potassium silicate. Its highly lamellar crystal structure allows an easy split into very thin strong transparent elastic plates. The mica group presents a total of 37 different types of mica from which Muscovite and Phlogopite are the most commonly used for commercial applications. Mica’s reflective optical properties are utilized in cosmetics, in paints and coatings. Besides it’s glittering and aesthetic effects, mica is used in the construction and plastic industries as a functional filler. Mica is also found in a significant number of parts and materials used in the automotive industry. It can withstand high temperature which makes it a suitable component for welding and frictional systems. Finally it is used as a lubricant in the oil & gas drilling sector.
